Musically,
Melody Cruz”
EARLY LIFE
Melody Cruz was born and raised surrounded by fading farmlands, tractor-trailer fumes, and repeating faces in small-town Catasauqua, PA. She is the daughter of Christian and Sarah Cruz (producer and singer, respectively), who met by laying down a demo in Christian’s home recording studio. Her parents dubbed her “Melody” with the intention that she would live up to the name by becoming a famous singer in her adult life.
At the age of 3, Cruz began that pursuit by performing alongside her mother and paternal grandfather with their band, Los Paisanos, at MusikFest (2003). Cruz’s mother held the microphone while she sang Ecuadorian nursery rhymes accompanied by her grandfather’s guitar playing. When Cruz was 8, she began guitar lessons which allowed her to accompany herself and busk annually on the Ocean City Maryland Boardwalk.
CAREER
2014-2020
At age 14, Cruz began frequently performing at bars, restaurants, and festivals in the Greater Lehigh Valley Area. In 2019, she recorded a demo of a freestyle song her father wrote in 1995 titled “I’m Falling for You.” She was then signed by Romeo Entertainment, and subsequently released “I’m in Love” (2019), “After We Ride” (2020) and “Let’s Get Away” (2020).
2021
Coming off her initial buzz in the freestyle genre, Cruz decided to branch out and released her first pop single “TOOLATE.” The song was written by Cruz and co-produced by her and her father, Christian. She landed her first solo MusikFest gig later that year where she performed her new release in front of an audience for the first time. Cruz was also featured onWFMZ’s 69 News at Sunrise for Music Monday, at which she debuted her successive release “Make Me Stay.” Cruz also appeared as a musical guest on The Mike Zambelli Show, and amassed 26,000 followers on her TikTok account.
2022
Cruz released her third single “Just Having Fun” on Friday, April 15 2022. The song received radio play on Alternativa HUB and was reviewed on the Rising Artists music blog. On Friday June 2, 2022, Cruz subsequently released “I Remember” with rapper Exton. Soon thereafter, Cruz met frequent collaborators The Audio Filesand performed both solo and alongside them at MusikFest and other local venues. With new releases under her belt, Cruz’s set lists were comprised of more originals than ever before. She was absolutely delighted when an audience member sang along to “Make Me Stay” at MusikFest – marking the first time someone outside of her immediate circle joined in with an original tune.
PERSONAL LIFE
When she isn’t writing, recording, or performing, Melody “daylights” as a guitar and songwriting teacher. She resides in her childhood home, surrounded by support from her mother, father, grandmother, sister, and boyfriend while she fights to penetrate the music industry. Some of her favorite non-musical things include dandelions, ramen noodles, and storm clouds, which can all be seen representing her personal brand. “As a musician I really relate to dandelions,” said Cruz, “The average person considers them disposable, and only refers to them as a nuisance or weed. They’re resilient though. The city lays down cement; the flower still grows. They’re strong, beautiful, and misunderstood like me.”
